Tanglewood Country House (Circa 1885) is situated in the Dargle Valley, Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands, within easy access of the N3 highway between Durban and Johannesburg on the Midlands Meander in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains.

The Dargle is the Midlands’ best kept secret, a nature lover’s treat in the green rolling hills of the countyside and has a distinctly Irish character. The early immigrants from Ireland who settled in the area took the name from an area remarkably similar, the Dargle River in Enniskerry, County Wicklow. The Great Sugar Loaf Mountain (565 m) overlooking the Dargle Valley in Ireland has an hauntingly similar shape and position to the iNhlosane Mountain which overlooks the Dargle Valley in the Midlands.

The area is also home to some of the Midlands Meander’s finest crafters who are a drawcard to this lesser travelled Meander Route, Built in 1885, Tanglewood captures the heritage of the era in the building and gardens which overlook the valley and has seven en-suite bedrooms each decorated in English Country Style, also exclusive use of a comfortable guest lounge and an adjoining private reading lounge.

Our cosy country pub with fireplace is the perfect place to enjoy a pre-dinner drink, or alternatively, enjoy the Provençal atmosphere in our dining room for an elegant evening meal.

Directions

From the N3 from Durban to Johannesburg or vice versa, take the Howick North/Tweedie off-ramp.  Travelling from Durban. At the offramp turn left, and at the T-junction turn right onto the R103 in the direction of Nottingham Road. Shortly after the Nelson Mandela Monument, turn left on the Dargle/Imphendle Road (At the Piggly Wiggly Farm Stall). Tanglewood Country House is 12 kilometres along this tarred road on the right hand side
